Architectural Excellence : This uniquely shaped building was designed in six modules to fit inside a parking facility at Washington DC’s busy Union Station. The exterior finish is embossed steel panel with urethane foam insulation core for added strength, in Regal Blue and Silver Greyhound colors. Interior is bright and welcoming with muted tones in painted gypsum board, P-lam wainscot with stainless steel trims and corners in counter area, porcelain floors in the lobby, VCT in the office areas and epoxy sealed concrete in utility rooms. Acoustical ceilings and sound absorbing materials were used to reduce the terminal noise. The layout provides a large, functional public area for ticket sales, with baggage lockup, storage and offices. Special features include a curved glass front wall, architectural column wraps in lobby, ticket windows and counters with aluminum rolling shutters and an 18' tall modular feature pylon, built as an integral part of the design to draw attention to the owners back lit signage.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The new modular bus terminal was placed on existing suspended garage floor slabs over the train system running below it. Above and below, these existing areas were full of high voltage wires, piping and structural elements and it was imperative that nothing be disrupted. This meant that the structural engineering of the modular building had to be precisely coordinated with existing conditions so that the new building weight, loads and spans could be distributed correctly. Because the terminal was in operation 24/7, the time allotment for the delivery and setting of the modules was critical. Shipped 90% completed, on six low bed carriers, modules were offloaded inside the parking garage, carefully slid in to place and connected to the slab and to each other. Working through the night the building was in place ready to begin service connections and architectural finishing in about 32 hours. This expedited process saved the owner significant interruption to their 24 hour bus service.

Technical Innovation : The modules navigated over sloped garage floor slabs clearing ceiling pipes by 1", coming in to position around existing columns. Attached to 1 of 3 parking garage slabs, 1/3 of the building uses rigid weld connections to steel plates that are epoxy-mounted to the slab to avoid drilling, while the other 2/3 area has fastened slide bearing plates and epoxy-mounted base plates with Teflon slide assemblies so that as the garage slab deflects with the ongoing traffic vibrations, the building is allowed to "slide." NRB completed a certified "pull test" to verify the epoxy connections would meet required loads. Concrete curbs poured up to the building with expansion joints, eliminated the need for stairs. The building is constructed of recycled steel and paints and sealants use within the building are low to no VOC. Lighting is split and on occupancy sensors for energy efficiency. HVAC system is comprised of two roof top units with a parapet type penthouse above to conceal the units.
