Architectural Excellence : This modular classroom consisted of two 14’x76’ and two 16’x76 modules installed together to form a four classroom complex. The building was installed with the threshold of the doors at grade. This method of installation eliminated the use of ADA decks, ramps and steps. The exterior siding color is Designer Beige with Navajo White mansard on a transverse roof line using an EPDM rubber roof. The classroom was designed to have 926 square feet of unobstructed space which surpasses the state requirement of 900 square feet. The interior walls are vinyl-covered gypsum and 26oz commercial carpeting that provides first-class acoustical treatment for a teaching and learning environment. The addition of an acoustical drop-ceiling using standard 2x4 acoustical tiles provides enhanced sound control within the space. The adjacent central corridor has VCT tile to ease maintenance upkeep. The width of this corridor was designed to allow 120 students to move freely between class periods.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : As the main building ran out of classroom space, this modular building provided the most cost-effective solution with the speed of delivery without compromising the quality of the building. A 30 ga. Galvanized steel underbelly installed beneath the floor aided as a moisture, air infiltration, and vermin barrier for the building. The insulation values are R-19 floor, R-11 sidewalls and R-30 ceiling. The use of perimeter frames allowed us to install the building on a permanent block foundation. By setting the building on a foundation this eliminated the need for ramp system and the children no longer had the hazards of slipping on a wet or snowy ramp. This lowered the maintenance cost of the building. On the exterior we utilized James Hardi “Stucco” Panels, along with Tyvex© house wrap and 7/16” OSB sheathing over R19 insulation. By using these four products, we lowered the infiltration of sound entering in the classrooms from all extraneous sources.

Technical Innovation : During the manufacturing process for a 60’x76’ classroom, we used two 14’x76’ and two 16’x76 units with 12” Jr. I-beam perimeter steel frames and 8” Jr. I-beam cross members 4’ on center. Each classroom came equipped with a wall hung HVAC unit with a CRV to aide in the fresh air requirements. The demising wall between each classroom has a double-layer of R-19 insulation installed to abate extraneous noise for an optimum learning environment. The central corridor has a one-hour fire rated and solid core one-hour rated doors. The rating of the corridor serves two purposes: (1) fire protection, (2) reduction of sound transfer from the central corridor. This classroom also had insulated DIG glass windows that allow a generous supply of natural light with high-energy efficient values. All electrical wiring is run through EMT conduit for added safety.
