Architectural Excellence : Black Diamond Group provided a self-contained 10’x31’ purpose-built modular home designed to house two media personnel during a three day survival simulation in support of the Queensland Government’s Survive 3 project. Survive 3 was organized by the Department of Local Community Recovery and Resilience to urge residents to prepare for natural disasters. Black Diamond was able to renovate an existing modular unit previously used as a temporary office space to suit the government’s need. The interior and exterior of the building were entirely reclad to provide an updated finish. A key design feature included an 8 mm clear Perspex wall allowing passers-by to watch the survivor’s every move. Black Diamond worked diligently yet promptly over the course of seven days to provide the Queensland Government with an ideal space for their survival simulation.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The purpose of the refurbished 10’x31’ modular building was primarily to house two media personnel during a disaster simulation, while raising awareness for disaster preparation in a program coordinated by the Queensland Government. Being a government funded public awareness project cost effectiveness was critical, refurbishing a modular unit that had been manufactured 10 years prior provided the project with a unique economic advantage. Black Diamond operated efficiently as the disaster simulation unit needed to be overhauled and installed onsite within seven days. This expedited refurbishment process provided the Government with a seamless installation and minimal disturbances at site, saving the client time and money. Black Diamond was able to provide an economical solution that supported the Survive 3 project. The client was not charged a rental fee for the four days that the unit was in use, they simply paid for the refurbishment of the building which resulted in a considerable co

Technical Innovation : The Queensland State Government had an urgent need for temporary accommodation to house two disaster simulation survivors in support of their Get Ready Queensland Survive 3 project. The timeliness of using off-site construction, in this case being a refurbished previously used modular unit, was an ideal solution for the Queensland Government’s budget and expedited schedule. The 10’x31’ self-contained modular unit was refurbished in order to provide a suitable and clearly visible living environment during a disaster simulation. Black Diamond removed the original steel front exterior and replaced it with 8 mm clear Perspex in order to provide a clear view into the activities of the survival simulation. This design feature was effective in drawing attention to the unit and to the Survive 3 campaign. The external and internal cladding were replaced, the internal linings were removed and replaced with 3.6mm polyester plywood, along with installing new four star energy air conditioners.
