Award Winner : ATCO Sustainable Communities Inc. (ASCI)

Architectural Excellence : ATCO Sustainable Communities was engaged by the First Nation client to custom design and construct a daycare to meet the needs of their community. The facility also needed to accommodate the Headstart program. In following ASCI’s Holistic Engagement Process, the design team met on site with daycare and Headstart staff, and Chief and Council to custom design the facility based on community needs. From the color matched metal roof to exterior finishes, all were selected to augment existing architectural themes within the Village. Roof skylights complimented spacious interior. ASCI continues to assist the community in developing a comprehensive and consistent urban development plan.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : ASCI was able to bring value to our client by offering a turnkey project delivery in a remote location. From architecture and engineering through project commissioning and training, ASCI offered a single point of contact allowing for a consistent and dependable communication process. In addition, the Holistic Engagement Process allowed ASCI designers to provide the client with real time costing of all the architectural design elements. This allowed ASCI and the client to make informed cost/decisions quickly during the design process. In having ASCI deliver the project as a turnkey facility, the client was able to open the daycare in under five months after the award of the contract.

Project Location City : Punnichy

Project Location State Name : SK

Technical Innovation : The units were delivered with hinged gabled roofs which were raised on site. ASCI designers leveraged years of successful modular knowledge, along with support from our manufacturing partner, to design a solution that balanced program requirements with cost effectiveness. The design needed to comply with the National Building Code of Canada, Province of Saskatchewan interpretation of daycare classification based on the ages of children, and Headstart Program specifications. In meeting directly with leadership and staff, ASCI was able to specifically design interior spacing to meet the current needs including two separately functioning program requirements. The facility was fully sprinklered and heavily insulated to achieve energy efficiency in a northern climate. ASCI provided extensive operations and maintenance training support to encourage longterm sustainable use of the facility as designed.
