Architectural Excellence : Without daily support in remote locations, workers require accommodations that allow them to work and survive self sufficiently for up to two weeks. This 10’ x 40’ self contained prototype was manufactured to provide a comfortable home and work environment for up to four people in the most remote and hostile settings.

Designed for use in extreme conditions, it was crucial the unit be built to withstand torrential downpours, temperatures ranging to 110oF, humidity of 80% as well as severe cold or snow.

This self contained unit was designed for possible use in mining or oil and gas exploration, avalanche or volcano watch, or other exploratory or geological activities. The structure consists of a two bedroom dormitory, full kitchen, dinning area and bathroom. To be fully self-sufficient, it was essential the unit be designed to generate its own power, provide fresh water and be equipped with a sewage system.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : In an effort to create a product that is fully self contained and self sufficient, we had to develop a more energy efficient, green product.

The potential for frigid winter temperatures and need to reduce heat loss were managed through the use of thermopane windows, aluminum curtains, fluorescent or halogen lighting, and inlayed heating mats. The .8 KW heating mats placed under the floor covering provide an energy efficient alternative to conventional 1.5 KW baseboard heaters. The heating system is also placed on a timer, reducing energy use in this fully insulated unit.

To manufacture a fully self sufficient module, water preservation was also crucial. Faucets contain infrared sensors distributing water for 10 seconds, then locking for 30 seconds before distributing again. A water saver, low flush toilet was also installed to conserve water.

Technical Innovation : This self sufficient unit includes two carpeted dormitories, a full bathroom with shower, and a kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave and cooking plate. The dining area is large enough to seat seven people and serves a secondary function as a small conference table. Satellite dish capabilities are built into the unit to accommodate the 27” wall mounted plasma television.

To ensure workers will be able to survive in desolate environments for days at a time, power and water are essential. For power generation, an energy efficient generator set is installed on a hinged platform extension. A 2,000 liter sewage tank with clean out capabilities and a 2,000 liter fresh water storage tank with a hydro pack pump and fill are both used to ensure the unit runs self sufficiently.

With eight lifting points integrated into the metal columns on the roof and ten adjustable leveling feet, the unit can be strategically lifted and placed by in the most obscure areas.

Total Square Feet : 424
