Award Winner : Ramtech Building Systems, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : The 15,207 s.f. two-story building is designed to house a Military Police Battalion. The building provides space for operations offices and houses three 860 s.f. classrooms featuring a unique field installed truss-girder supporting a 15’ cantilever in the center. These classrooms are divided by two folding acoustical partitions allowing for flexibility from 860 to 2,580 s.f. of instructional space. There are 22 individual modules combined with a site installed in-fill section to achieve the desired footprint. The building features two stairways and a 2,500 lb. two-stage hydraulic elevator. The exterior is a combination of masonry on the body and an EFIS finish across the gabled ends of a field installed 6 in 12 standing seam roof. The Unit Operations Facility is located on the base’s main cantonment near an old warehouse district. The area is a historical district and required Ramtech to coordinate with the Base Historian and Architect on the building profile as well as the exterior.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : To comply with federal executive orders, all new federal construction must meet the requirements of LEED Silver Certification. In addition, the building’s energy consumption was designed to exceed the requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 by at least 30%. The mechanical system utilizes a system well suited for a desert environment that incorporates an evaporative assisted D-X packaged 25 ton RTU. The Trane Intelipak Unit and the 26 Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes are controlled by a Trane digital controls system connected to a base-wide Energy management Control Systems (EMCS) through an open implementation of LON. Other LEED compliance in the building includes automatic lighting controls, two-stage low consumption flush valves, waterless urinals, Energy Star roofing, recycling of waste materials to achieve a 50% diversion of materials normally destined for the landfill, construction materials with 20% recycled content and the use of selected Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) lumber products.

Technical Innovation : Ramtech’s unique Accelerated Building System allowed for compliance with the Army’s requirement of a 6”, 4,000 psi concrete slab foundation. Since the structure houses U.S. combat troops, rigid Anti-Terrorism construction was incorporated into the design including blast resistant doors and windows and a building envelope encapsulation in the event of a chemical or biological attack. The building’s electrical system utilizes both 120/208 and 480/277v. through a 600 amp service with an internal step-down transformer for 120/208 loads. The second story floor utilized 1-1/8” plywood and a 1” top coat of “Gyp-Crete” self-leveling concrete. To communicate between floors, a two stage ThyssenKrupp hydraulic elevator with pit and sump were provided. The data and comm. system features both a 900 pair copper and fiber optics entrance, with CAT-5 cabling utilized throughout the building.
