Award Winner : Art's-Way Scientific, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : Art’s-Way Scientific was called upon to provide a food safety inspection laboratory for a major food testing company. This 744 SF Modular Laboratory is comprised of a single, 12’ wide x 62’ long modular building section with an attached 10’ long mechanical skid. The design is based upon the Food and Drug Administration ORA Laboratories Procedure Document No: ORA-LAB.5.3 Facilities and Environmental Conditions. The buildings ADA compliant design features restroom, lab, testing space, confirmation and waste storage as well as mechanical space isolated from the lab environment. Stainless steel doors, insulated windows, epoxy floor with antimicrobial wall surface provide a sterile environment to house the processing and analytical equipment needed to provide testing. Steel laboratory casework with chemical resistant countertops and built in epoxy sinks were installed.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Food Processing plants are challenged with providing products absent of the pathogens that we read about in the newspaper. An outbreak of e-coli could destroy the reputation and future sales of the food provider or processor. The faster a food processer can get quality control results, the better chance of eliminating any outbreaks and stopping recalls, lost production and scrapped inventories. Modular testing facilities offer the advantage of relocation to any site for extended periods of time. By bringing the lab to the sample, manufacturers and testing contractors eliminate the expenses associated with the transfer of samples by facilitating the on-site media testing. Accomplished in a stand-alone facility, there is no need to modify existing structures outfitted for other purposes. Art’s Way Scientific’s modular food safety labs offers streamlined testing and improved public safety adhering to all the guidelines and specific regulations associated with the type of testing being done.

Technical Innovation : The challenge of the food safety lab was design and compliance with the many codes and regulations that govern such structures. This was accomplished using an HVAC design requiring 8-10 air changes per hour. Biosafety cabinets and autoclaves were incorporated in the design with special attention given to the exhausting of equipment. The laboratory is outfitted with wireless communication capability and a Millipore water treatment system.
