Food Safety Microbiological Laboratory Testing Facility

The transport frame had to be tested and inspected by a certified inspector with WABO. The WABO Special Inspection Registration Program is intended to provide building departments with the means to meet the obligation imposed on the building official to approve special inspectors. The International Building Code (IBC) specifies that 'the special inspector shall be a qualified person who shall demonstrate his/her competence to the satisfaction of the building official, for inspection of the particular type of construction or operation requiring special inspection.' Architectural Excellence : The building has mechanical room space, a media prep room, sample receiving room, locker room, ADA restroom, sample prep, two incubator rooms with independent heating systems, a large sample read/enumeration room, a locked pathogen room and a waste room. Included are several autoclave systems, sinks, eyewash sink and spray, commercial freezers, independent heat, shelving and mobile bakery racks with stainless pans are used to hold media. Four windows were added to enhance the users' experience and environment. Specialty equipment including microscopes, heating trays, and several workstations were set up with over 30 data ports for tracking their samples and data. Faux brick stone facade was added for appearance characteristics. Solar panels were installed to this unit to meet the State of Washington 406.2 energy requirements. A concrete walkway was added to the entry and the area will be landscaped with shrubs, trees and employee picnic area this spring.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The final design had some issues with the fire set back to an adjacent owner. A firewall was designed to be set on the modular unit on site. After cost reviews and finding it wasn’t a cost-effective solution the owner reached out the adjacent landowner and was able to lease some space to forgo the need of the firewall. The owner also decided to purchase the axles, tires, and hitch so that when they are ready to move the unit everything will be on-site and won’t need to purchase or rent them later. Having the owner’s project leader come to the plant to measure and gauge the equipment and gather exact dimensions was helpful to the owner to deliver the unit with the exact fit of equipment allowing them to add as many items as they could to utilize the entire space of the unit.

Green Building Description : Thermal comfort including R49 insulation in the roof and attic, R29 in exterior walls, R30 in floor joists, opaque doors with U0.37 value, air barrier tests were performed to ensure building envelope was airtight. Four windows were added for lighting enhancements with low E argon gas-filled with .1 air leakage and .26 U-value. A Jinko Solar 380 watt monocrystalline solar PV module at 19.28% efficiency was used in a series of three panels. 14' aluminum mounting rails were used to mount them onto the modular unit with six tilt legs for standoff adjustments. An AP Systems, Model YC100-3 DC to AC 208V 3-Phase Micro-Inverter was used with a maximum output power of 900W, the nominal output voltage at 120Y x 3. Solar panels were used to keep the unit a green building and meet the Washington Energy 406.2 code for additional energy efficiency options.

Technical Innovation : Due to the energy efficiency requirements in the State of Washington solar panels were needed to meet the 406.2 code. Special considerations were taken in the design and installation of the solar panels so that they could be removed during transit and then installed once the unit was at the site in Wenatchee, Washington. High-efficiency doors and windows were used with U.037 ratings, roof insulation at R49, exterior walls at R23, flooring insulation at R30 and a five-sided envelope was created. The location of the unit changed from the State of Texas to the State of Washington in Cashmere to Wenatchee, Washington. Innovative accomplishments were made with different structural design scenarios changed from location to location and when the final location was determined the highest structural loading was used so the unit can be moved anywhere within the State of Washington.
