Architectural Excellence : Naval Support Activity Bethesda is located just north of the Nation’s Capital and is responsible for base operational support for its major tenant the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. It was established in 2011 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Act, which consolidated National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The fire station on campus needed to be rebuilt while remaining operational. A parcel of land at the corner of the engine garage was used to construct the temporary building. White steel siding was selected to match the surrounding stone buildings. A covered vestibule was constructed connecting the garage to the modular. One enclosed and one open pre-fabricated aluminum stair tower was constructed with careful design planning bridging underground utility lines that ran through the site. The interior has a fully equipped kitchen, bedrooms and restrooms that are of better quality then the existing facility being renovated.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The modular building structure along with the pre-fabricated stair towers accomplished the speed to occupancy requirement of the renovation project while staying within the cost perimeters set aside to accomplish the task. The pre-fabricated stair and ramp company Up Side Innovations was a key player in the success of the project. Meeting all federal and state guidelines for accessibility along with working on an extremely safety concious and secure site required accurate design of the stair towers and attention to scheduled coordination of activities.
