Architectural Excellence : Fernbrooke State School is a landmark project, praised for its modern architectural appearance, bold colour use and seamless blend of old and new indoor and outdoor learning environments. The 1,500sqm multi storey modular masterpiece makes a bold statement as the first stage of a flagship education hub. 34 modules were installed plus a toilet block and nine loads of stairs to cater for increasing local enrolments.
The stunning colours, finishes and lansdcaping were artfully integrated to reflect the school’s theming and locale. The façade features custom aluminium blades designed in-house, linking with the lush tropical surrounds. The clever upper storey design features full height glass windows to maintain an unobstructed view of sporting grounds outside, provide inspiring learning spaces with natual light, above undercover play and learning environments on the floor below. Close design collaboration resulted in many other design enhancements and features adding value for the client.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Delivered in budget and 2 weeks ahead of schedule, the collaboration has been hailed by the client as the model for future private, public partnerships, despite being the largest value project it had undertaken. The striking and durable finishes provide low-cost ongoing maintenance and cleaning, reducing whole of life cycle costs.
Working closely with the client through design and construct, extra features like flood mitigation elements were added to provide extra value, along with many other benefits.
The design allows long term savings, with inbuilt features to meet community needs. For instance, classrooms feature innovative teaching walls, accessible via the bulkhead on the grid ceiling. The walls have an interactive screen that’s hidden away when not used, lockable spaces, GPOs for charging electronic devices & space for tech upgrades, with pathways left for future equipment connectivity. Technical Innovation : This hero project features a wealth of ingenuity. The project’s design re-claims unused space with a flush entry from playing oval to slab and highly specified touches such as engineering flooring to optimize sustainable benefits.
Module joins are disguised to provide a permanent feel, with cladding removed and joins flush set onsite. Custom flashings and bright feature paint evoked the strikingly unique external façade. Concrete walkways and base slab were poured onsite to meet building wall levels, creating a grounded appearance with a flush entry that extends seamlessly, linking the grass oval to learning spaces.
The solution included prefabrication offsite, site set up, the entire civil package and onsite works, landscaping, lifts, staircases, safe entry points as well as electrical and plumbing upgrades, providing fire access and a new school entry. Being a flood prone area, the civil works thoughtfully included a large swale and pit system that can handle a 100-year flood event
