Award Winner : Phoenix Modular Elevator
Architectural Excellence : The project is two duplexed modular elevators with a single modular machine room for both units. The elevator cars are 3500lb and 5000lb capacity. The smaller unit is ADA compliant and the larger elevator is gurney compliant with front and back doors for use by the hotel staff. The total tower height is 50’-11” from the pit floor to the roof line, and the total travel is 35’-7-1/2”. The interior of the hoistway and machine room is utilitarian with a 2-hour fire rating. The cab interior is warm and welcoming and fits perfectly with the theme of the building, with stainless steel doors and jams and raised oak panels with a stainless-steel reveal. The ceiling contains stainless-steel panels with LED can lights. The interior for both elevators was fitted with pads and hooks and the units were up and running early to assist with construction. For us, it was considered a custom build due to the size and capacity, but still well within the abilities of the Phoenix Team.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Cost effectiveness is accomplished in several ways. First, the modular-built elevator is not subject to cost overruns due to weather. The elevator hoistway and cab are built in a factory and the work is never slowed by outside weather conditions. This is especially important in northern areas such as Wisconsin. Second, the elevator cab is built at the same time as the shaft. This saves significant time compared to the stick-built alternative. Third, material waste is significantly reduced in our production. We know the exact total amount of materials for each elevator and consider layout of the materials to keep costs lower. Lastly, the installation of the elevator, plumbing and electrical work was all completed in just two days for both elevators once on site. The project manager commented that having a modular elevator up and running so early shaved at least six months off the total completion time for the project.

Green Building Description : The modular elevator is a much greener alternative in many ways. There is waste reduction, high-quality LED lighting, the control unit has energy-saving features, and more energy efficient and recycled components are utilized. This project specifically demonstrated the savings of energy through the construction schedule and weather conditions. In a typical construction project in Wisconsin that starts in March, the elevator shaft would have had to be heated and insulated. This would hopefully prevent the concrete blocks from heaving or shifting or the poured concrete wall from curing incorrectly. Heating two concrete block structures that are 50’ tall in sub-zero temperatures would have used a significant amount of energy with no guarantee that the process would have worked. With our factory, there is no concern for winter conditions and no wasted energy on heating.

Technical Innovation : In this particular project, there were three specific challenges. First, the customer requested one machine room for both units with significant space restrictions. Our engineering team worked closely with the customer to meet their needs while still meeting the elevator code. Drawings were relayed to the factory line and production was completed on time.
The second challenge was speed of job completion requested despite it being a custom cab interior. New jigs were conceived and constructed before the materials arrived. This insured all components fit perfectly and speed of production was not compromised in any way. The result was a project completion within our deadline and faster than any other alternative for a commercial-quality elevator.
Lastly, this is the first elevator that has left a factory with LED lighting in the hoistway. Shafts are often dark and dangerous but due to this innovation, all our elevators have a well-lit hoistway for safety.
