Architectural Excellence : The classroom building was comprised of (9) 12’x72’ modules to provide an overall size of 7776 square feet. Recessed double entry doors at each end of the hallway provide an efficient path and egress for students to and from the classrooms. Interior classroom doors were also recessed and interior walls insulated for sound protection. All hardware and fixtures were specified by the School District to meet the level of quality provided in site constructed buildings within the District. The floor covering was specified commercial grade carpet and site installed after the building modules were in place and interior work completed. A natural earth tone exterior color was selected to compliment the existing building colors and the Colorado environment.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The classroom building was designed to meet the Colorado adopted 2012 IBC that requires 2”x6” exterior wall studs providing R-21 insulation as well as framing and insulation to provide a value of R-30 in the floor and R-38 in the roof system. The wall mounted HVAC units were installed on alternate sides of the building with a programmable thermostat in each classroom to provide a more even distribution of heat and air-conditioning. The IT equipment room required a split system to provide proper cooling for the computer server equipment. Modular classroom space provided an expedient, flexible, and cost effective solution to the rapid growth of the School District.

Technical Innovation : The School District of Aurora, CO has experienced rapid growth and required an expedient solution to add high quality classroom space. The site required the modular space to be placed in close proximity to the existing school building. This required rolling the modules into the site pad area which was prepped with flush to grade piers and a concrete skirting ribbon that provided rodent protection in the crawl space. A poly vapor barrier was provided over the grade in the crawl space for passive moisture protection. The crawl space is accessible from the hatch provided in the building mechanical room. Each classroom was provided with cabinetry including a counter and sink. To provide future flexibility in the building being moved and placed at other sites pre-fabricated aluminum ramps and steps were provided.
