Architectural Excellence : Los Pelambres recently opened a mine in Chile and required a modular camp to house more than 1200 people. It was to be innovative and inspiring, and to be built in the driest desert in the world - the Atacama - located in a remote region of Chile. The challenging location meant that transportation had to be well planned and executed to avoid delays and additional costs. The design and materials for this project had to have a life span equal to the copper mine - at least 25 years. This camp consists of dormitories, kitchen, dining room, meeting room and recreation rooms. Three wings are stacked two stories high. Each bedroom has a semi-private or private bath. The kitchen and dining facilities comprise pre-engineered metal buildings with panelized exterior and interior metal walls and wood gluelam beams. The dining room accommodates up to 600 people. All buildings are connected by corridors that allow workers to conveniently move around the facility.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Given the extreme climate conditions, the units are well insulated for not only the high temperatures but also for the cold desert nights. Materials used for these units included double glazed and thermal panels for all windows and insulated doors. The interior dormitory was constructed with vinyl covered gypsum, and the exterior is made of metal siding. This design will allow flexibility and low maintenance cost. Common areas were site-built in a panelized fashion using metal-clad polyurethare siding (SIP type panels). Having both prefabricated units and onsite construction met the client’s requirements of a both cost effective and timely project.

Technical Innovation : This turnkey project required site earth movement, water treatment, plant sewer, treatment plant and electricity grid. These prerequisites are similar to the needs of designing a small city. In order to meet the client’s needs, an efficient design was required to facilitate the installation and completion of these units onsite in record time.
