Architectural Excellence : Founded in 1934, this residential education center in Madison, CT needed to expand and update its facility with a state-of-the-art media center and additional classrooms. ModSpace worked closely with this school to develop a dramatic centerpiece that would set a tone of education and creativity for the entire campus. Standing from and center the custom-built “Tower” seamlessly blends a framework for the building’s modular construction with a vine remind students of structure and growth through education. The tower is complemented by the “Freeze” fascia system. ModSpace incorporated this unique representation into the standard fascia system from the manufacturer. A “Cheek” wall extends above the bottom of the wall assembly to further accentuate the building exterior.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The turnkey building was completed in just 150 days. Delivered and ready for occupancy in April 2010 ModSpace capitalized on the benefits of modular building to expedite the construction process and get the school up and running much sooner than with traditional construction. Cost overruns were strategically avoided with factory fabrication while the Northeast was punished by record harsh winter with record snowfall. Nonetheless, the building was completed and in place in record time allowing the school to accelerate its plans for increased enrollment. Standard vinyl gypsum, carpet, VCT, and solid birch doors were also incorporated into the building making it cost effective and energy efficient.

Technical Innovation : At one end of the building the media center stands over the campus with 16-foot high ceilings. ModSpace transported the framework for the preassembled modules over roadways restricted to a height of 13’6”. Once at the site, the main media center module was crane placed on the foundation system which incorporates the modular building floor just above finished grade eliminating the need for ramps or stairs. The crane was then used to raise the roof to the 16-foot interior ceiling height using an innovative 4-inch over 3-inch telescoping column system that was then welded in place before the prefabricated, prewired walls were installed. By using this inventive system, ModSpace was able to satisfy its customer’s desire for a 16-foot interior ceiling height with modular solution.
