Architectural Excellence : The Phase One design of the DuBois Integrity Academy was engineered to accommodate a modular second floor addition to help minimize the initial construction cost. Phase One of the school consists of a 25,000 SF permanently installed building that houses approximately 400 students. The building was constructed with two wings and a site-built common area that is utilized as a cafeteria and assembly space. This first phase contains 17 classrooms and an administration area with offices, a conference room, and an open reception area as well as a nurse’s station, common area with a warming kitchen, restrooms and a teacher’s workroom. The exterior of the building consists of brick wainscot with Hardie plank siding and an exterior lighting protection system. As enrollment continues to grow, a Phase Two build-out is planned which will add a second floor for grades three to five. This will add an additional 12,300 SF with 11 classrooms, stairwells and elevator to the current structure.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The overall project design went through multiple iterations, with a budget that was both driven by the anticipated student count and limited due to a site that required significant grading work to become suitable for use as an educational facility. Ultimately, to stay on budget, the project team settled on a sprinkled, wood frame structure. The project team also opted to use a factory that was located less than four hours from the project site to minimize transportation costs for the owner. At the factory, the mechanical system was designed and installed to minimize on-site work to only consist of approximately five percent of the total material and labor. This combined with a shortened project schedule, allowed IMS to provide the 25,000 SF educational building in about five months from award.

Green Building Description : DuBois Integrity Academy was constructed with a number of green features, including motion light sensors and programmable thermostats to help reduce energy costs. The commons area has large insulated windows around the entire upper perimeter of the room which brings in natural light to help reduce the amount of time the electric lights are in use. The site-built area also contains high-efficiency furnaces with energy recovery ventilators to provide optimum air quality and comfort. In all classroom spaces, CO2 sensors were installed to improve the air quality for the students and teachers. Even down to the crawlspace of the building, green features were added through humidistats that are tied into the roof mounted exhaust fans to eliminate any excess or unwanted moisture below the building.

Technical Innovation : The innovative design of Phase One was constructed to accommodate a future second story. With a waiting list of hundreds of students, the vertical expansion will serve the growing student population with minimal construction disruption to the current students, teachers, and staff. The site-built common area, which serves as the central focus point of the school, was constructed on a concrete slab and utilizes the side walls of the adjacent modules to support the roof trusses of this area. The building also includes an internal roof drainage system. Through combining modular and site-built elements, the hybrid process accelerated the construction schedule to be ready for the 2015-16 school year.
