Architectural Excellence : This office complex is an extension of an original 12-unit office complex Devon was using to house operations employees at its Jackfish 1 Site. It was a challenge to tie the new units in due to an existing truss roof. We utilized an oversized Arctic corridor (14’ x 49’) complete with oversized windows to connect the existing office complex to the new 8-unit office complex. This gave the entire complex an H-shape. To give it a more inviting appeal and serve as a buffer to the elements, we included a modular vestibule at the main entrance. The expansion houses 15 new offices, men and womens washrooms, a conference/computer room, lunchroom, file storage and server room. The storage room houses a very specific, heavy rolling file system that required an increase in the floor load capacity. The UPS/Server room has a chemical fire suppression system. It requires automatic door closers, as well as an exterior louvered air vent that will close when the fire suppression system is triggered.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Given the remote location of this office complex, the modular design build was far more cost effective compared to a site-built structure. The utilization of the truss roof design allowed for a greater R-rating in the roof while at the same time adding additional fire safety.

Technical Innovation : We dealt with several technical issues for this permanent office expansion. The arctic corridor we used to tie the existing complex into the new one presented a challenge: we had to align three doorways to marry the two complexes. We had to beef up the floor design to handle the added weight of the rolling file storage system as it moves across a large open area. The trussed roof design required added support and the ability to disperse weight loads where the modules come into contact with the truss roof. Finally, we had to take all the specs from the existing complex into account when tying into the existing sprinkler, fire alarm and electrical systems.
