Architectural Excellence : A two-story 7,300 sqft temporary fire house currently located in Washington, DC, having a footprint of about 6,100 sqft, includes many work areas. The kitchen includes built in pantry cabinets, all necessary appliances, double sinks, and coffee station; Officer Bunks provide a quiet retreat. A fire pole was removed and reinstall from an existing engine company, cut to fit, and reinstalled at the new facility. 30 existing gear lockers were also moved to the apparatus bay of the new temporary station. The apparatus bay includes medical storage, fitness room, and decontamination room with a shower base and eyewash station. Three roll up doors allows room for 3 engines. Located on the second floor of the bunk house are men and women’s locker rooms with showers, multiple bunks, and restrooms. Traditional Modular Construction, combined with UpGrade Modular Construction, enabled us to build this building on a compact site with minimal interference to traffic or surrounding businesses.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Part of a multi-million dollar development project, throughout Washington DC, Modular Construction was chosen for this project to take advantage of the fast Modular Concurrent Construction process that enabled a rapid completion date. This project was completed in approximately half the timeframe of traditional construction, which provided great saving on this project; as well as, allowing the main multi-million dollar project start sooner.

Additional savings were provided by the UpGrade Modular slab floor design enabling reduced foundation costs; while producing approximately two and one half less waste in the overall construction labor and materials.

The complete overall modular design will save the District of Columbia a substantial amount of money during its reuse; as this design is 100% relocatable and is scheduled to be relocated to another project after five years.

Technical Innovation : The 2-Story Sleeping Quarters was designed and constructed using Traditional Modular Construction, in order to take advantage of the speed concurrent construction, marginal site disturbance and minimal material laydown required, especially with very little space available working on this very tight site.

The Apparatus Bay was constructed utilizing the innovative UpGrade Modular Construction design; which provided a high-quality, modular, steel-framed structure designed for permanence, with the unique ability to be relocated multiple times to new sites while maintaining the same quality and integrity as a new structure. The UpGrade Modular design also provided an 18’ floor to ceiling height, allowing the fire apparatus to fit in the bay; and the installation afforded the project to have only a few laborers, an on-site crane, and a concrete slab to serve as the foundation. The base structure was installed in 1 day, with the final fit out to occurring only over several weeks.
