Architectural Excellence : The building exterior fits attractively within the Zoo’s earth tone requirements. An odd elevated site was used to allow for views over the Zoo’s property. Large cedar wrap-around decks hide the site’s retaining walls, support buttresses, and rainwater collection tanks. For visual appeal, two modules were offset at the main entrance, special architectural flat awnings were utilized and supported by extended parapets. Real rock wainscot, facades and columns were utilized to conceal the appearance of modules. Canopies were installed for shade, visual appearance, and to conceal rooftop air conditioners and vent stacks. The exciting interior was site finished and includes 4 wall paint colors, a 32’ Binswanger glass wall, two carpet tile colors, ceramic tile and wainscot in the restrooms, and 7 different vinyl tile colors in the break, lunch and file rooms. A 2x2 tegular ceiling was installed with multiple lighting options. The Zoo provided inspiring artwork and screen printed dividers.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This project for the Zoo is intended to be permanent, however simple efforts were taken in the layout and use of standard finish materials, that would allow for the relocation of the building in the future. Cost effective, and typical industry materials such as t-grid, texture and painted wall board, and vinyl tile were utilized, but designed in a colorful way that made the final product artistic. Williams Scotsman collaborated with the Zoo to provide the client’s trades access to the schedule when most efficient for their installation of security, data, communications, etc. In lieu of complete skirting, the wrap- around deck was installed at an elevation to provide for visual cover, under floor access, and ventilation. In total, ten subcontractors were utilized for installation and finishes, each staged properly and task with their specialty. This led to work being completed timely, to the design, and without vendor change orders.

Technical Innovation : The Zoo acquired a prior motel site adjacent to their property. The site is heavily sloped and had an elevated pad for parking, play yard and pool. Williams Scotsman worked with the Zoo to design a building large enough to fit the total of the retained pad site. Elevated decks were supported by footings, and enclosed areas under the deck are used for storage, service and to hide rainwater collection tanks. Coordination with the manufacturer allowed for support of all site installed stone, extended parapets, awnings, canopies and the interior glass wall. Though not a Green certified building, site irrigation water is collected on-site, insulation was increased above code, motion sensor light switches and double pane fixed windows are used throughout, and LED lights were utilized in lieu of incandescent flood lights, both interior and exterior. With incremental costs over wood framed modules, the attention to finishes made this a artful and visually desirable building.
