Additional Info

Award Winner : Blazer Industries, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : This building was designed to provide restroom and shower facilities for a public beach park in Florida. The design intent was to provide a structure that captured the feel of the local small building architecture while being easy to operate and maintain in a high use, high temperature and high humidity environment.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By having the restroom manufactured off-site the site development contractor was able to avoid all of the job-site coordination issues and inefficiencies inherent between trades working on such a concentrated project. Another advantage experienced by the site developer was the reduction in potential for theft or damage to unsecured work and a faster build time for the overall project.

Technical Innovation : This building provided several technical challenges given that it was built with concrete and CMU block in Oregon and transported to Florida where it was set up on a public beach exposed to the full force of hurricanes as they make landfall. The generous roof overhangs around the building had to be designed to fold back onto the building to keep the shipping width cost effective and then be unfolded and securely attached on site with connections strong enough to handle hurricane force winds. The upper portion of the structure was constructed as independent roof modules that were set on site on the top of the lower modules after the roof overhang sections were set and secured.
