Additional Info

Award Winner : Metric Modular

Architectural Excellence : The Britco design team worked with the client’s architect as well as electrical and mechanical consultants to design a large school annex for use over a 3 or 4 year period to allow for seismic upgrading and the construction of an addition to the existing school.

Consisting of seventeen buildings, this classroom complex includes clear-span wide-open classrooms, a library, office and full washroom facilities. With a suspended ceiling and recessed lighting, ceiling skylights and corridor roof venting techniques were incorporated to provide natural light and ventilation.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : High efficiency wall-mounted and rooftop self-contained HVAC units optimize zoning control with low noise intrusion critical for a learning environment while introducing sufficient quantities of fresh air to maintain indoor air quality levels. Automatic night set-back thermostats reduce energy use during non-occupied times of the day & week and the library rooftop HVAC unit incorporates an economizer to utilize "free cooling" when possible for reduced energy consumption.

Occupied Date : 6/29/2007

Production Start Date : 3/15/2007

Project Location City : Vancouver

Project Location State Name : BC

Technical Innovation : The buildings were designed with site-installed connecting corridors to make all buildings accessible through covered hallways and staircases and are engineered to meet all structural requirements including seismic loading. A full sprinkler system was installed at the factory with completion and commissioning on site.

The buildings were installed on an existing tennis court under very tight site constraints. Delivery and sequencing of modules to arrive at site was closely coordinated with transport and install crews to ensure timely setup of the buildings. The foundation design incorporates grade level supports to minimize the impact on the site in order to reduce the cost of returning the site to its former use once the complex is no longer required.
