Corvallis Waldorf SAGE Classroom
Additional Info
Award Winner : Pacific Mobile Structures, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This 3 room SAGE (Smart Academic Green Environment) classroom was designed by the School of Architecture at Portland State University and built by Blazer Industries. The building has a modern architectural look with large overhangs. Interior exposed ducting and shed roof allows for expanded ceiling heights to 11’. They combined the latest thinking in healthy learning environments with green building practices. It is a cost-effective, award-winning classroom alternative. In 2013, the SAGE project was honored with a SEED (Social Economic Environmental Design) Award at the Green build conference in San Francisco.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The interior features BIOPCM Phase Change Material in the walls that act as a thermal mass to stabilize indoor temperatures. The structure has large overhangs to protect against unwanted heat gain. Ceiling fans, controlled by remote, and the ceiling height aid in ventilation and energy efficiency. The building also has 3 sun cooler solar powered exhaust fans (1 in each classroom). 2 skylights in each classroom over the white boards were installed to add natural lighting and reduce the need for lights. Interior lighting is suspended wrap around diffused LED fixtures. Tank-less water heaters are located at each sink.

Green Building Description : The SAGE classroom is designed to provide the ultimate in a healthy learning environment through the use of an ERV mechanical system that exchanges 100% fresh air into the building. The Climate is also controlled by the use of Big Ass Fans continually moving the air throughout. Large overhangs and a TPO white roof protect against Thermal heat. Compared to a standard classrooms 8’ ceiling height the SAGE is designed with 9’-11’ ceilings incorporating the use of clearstory windows and skylights to bring in the maximum amount of natural daylighting. All materials have low to no VOC’s. In 2013 SAGE was honored at the Green Build Conference in San Francisco with the Prestigious SEED award.

Technical Innovation : Special features of this building include a shed style roof which allows for up to 4 times more window area than a standard classroom allowing for more natural light. It has an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) that provides 3 times the fresh air. The building also contains cabinets and sinks in each of the classrooms. Environmentally safe building materials that don’t release toxins into the air and low VOC paint were also used. The tilt on clerestory window blinds are operated by a battery powered remote control for easy raising and lowering.
