Architectural Excellence : The Inca Pavilion is an expansion of an existing workforce accommodation facility, providing an additional 204 rooms. The project consists of a three-storey hotel style structure with spacious bedrooms and private en-suite bathrooms. The facility incorporates an open atrium design, with rooms around a central atrium area, open to skylights above. This design allows for a popular interior garden space for workers who rarely see green vegetation at this altitude (14,000 feet above sea level). Exposed wood beams and open walkways for access to bedrooms further soften the character of the building. The exterior is clad with a brightly coloured steel finish, a sharp contrast to the monotony of the desert surroundings.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The atrium design of the facility allows for a greenhouse effect, retaining heat at night, mitigating some of the extreme temperature variation in the desert location and reducing heating costs. The interior gardens improve interior humidity and increase occupant comfort. Lack of humidity is a typical problem associated with high altitude facilities, and they are often provided with humidification. The design of the Inca Pavilion allowed for the elimination of this added expense, reducing overall energy demand.

Technical Innovation : The modular bedroom units were manufactured in Santiago with two bedrooms separated by an internal corridor. Once the units arrived on site, the modules were cut in two and installed around the central atrium area with site installed handrails. This design allowed for significant cost savings in freight and better utilization of the manufacturing facility.
