Additional Info

Award Winner : Meehleis Modular Building Inc

Architectural Excellence : Clayton Valley Charter High School science building includes two classrooms and a teacher work room between the classrooms. The teacher workroom is designed so that all materials and chemicals can be safely stored and locked. Each classroom and teacher workroom is equipped with acid resistant work stations, fume hood, emergency shower and all the necessary casework. Exterior finishes, including stucco which was applied on site, were selected to match the existing campus. This is a slab on grade building with a metal raised seamed roof. Four foot overhangs in the front and back were incorporated into the roof designs. The side by side arrangement of modules was the most efficient configuration for this project.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The method of installation was an important cost saving component to the client. To help keep cost down, Meehleis Modular science classroom design was re-used at additional district sites. Due to the high cost of traditional site built construction, permanent modular buildings were the logical choice. Due to restricted site conditions (access of equipment and active classes), the district chose permanent modular construction for its accelerated schedule. The overall quality of the buildings matching that of existing site construction and longevity only made this project more appealing to the client.

Technical Innovation : This project was one of many new buildings within the district’s new construction master plan. Materials used included: low-E windows, recycled steel and lumber from sustainable forests. The modules and all of the prefabricated components were built in a net zero plant utilizing the plant’s solar array to generate electricity. The plant also maintains a landfill diversion rate of 85 to 95 percent every month, thus minimizing the impact to the environment.
