City of Glendale Skate Park
Additional Info
Award Winner : Modtech
Architectural Excellence : The building was designed as a retail pro shop and concession building for the adjacent skate park. The concrete block exterior wainscot and contrasting color metal mansard roof add visual interest and match the architecture of surrounding buildings. Grade level entry, concrete floor and site applied stucco give the building a permanent appearance. The raised parapet wall breaks up the roof line and assists customers in locating the entrance.
The restroom, a private office and a small concession room with limited kitchen equipment are opposite the building entrance and are separated from the open area by a display counter. The wrap around counter also allows for product display and an area for a cash register. Interior walls are finished with drywall then painted in bright red to interior to attract the younger customer base.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Two buildings of similar design were manufactured simultaneously therefore increasing factory efficiencies and eliminating redesign cost and time. As the buildings were designed to be permanent, relocatability was not a factor. The building is comprised of 3 modules with one module slightly longer to form an entrance area and add architectural interest. To minimize traffic in and out of the building and to effectively use exterior space, a sliding window links the covered patio and the concession room.
