Citizen Care Pod (CCP)

Architectural Excellence : In response to the escalating pressures of the global pandemic, entrepreneurial partners developed the CCP prototype in two weeks without solicitation by a client. The 20 or 40 ft retrofitted shipping container is designed to physically and safely separate the front-line testing administrator from the patient being tested or screened. Each pod can be equipped with four to 10 testing stations with optimal space to ensure physical distancing between workers. The design process was split into four streams: structural, electrical, finishes, and plug-and-play technology. In order to prototype and manufacture a product while normal supply chains were delayed, the solution needed to be simple, mobile, compact, boutique and easy to adapt based on client requirements. The interior was finished with easy to clean, hygienic rubber sheet flooring, PVC sheet wall coverings, and stainless-steel work surfaces. The CCP can be branded and rapidly installed to large-scale or high-traffic sites.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : With the collaborative nature of this project, it was essential for PCL to create a cost-effective solution to having multiple trades involved. Regular meetings amongst subtrades as well as opportunities to work concurrently within the plant reduced labour hours and lessened opportunity for errors. In order to reduce manufacturing and labor costs, the team chose to repurpose shipping containers instead of creating the pod from the ground up. The shell of the container was used as the main structure of the pod and was retrofitted to include cladding, electrical and interior finishes. From the multiple assemblies to the finishes, high quality materials were used to ensure a long lifespan for the pod. The overall structure of the pod would be minimally impacted by any changes to the design in the future. As a purpose-built unit, the mobile testing center was made to be shipped to various locations for different uses and can be easily transported and forklifted into place.

Green Building Description : Its relocatable nature makes the Citizen Care Pod more efficient, as it saves costs and can be easily moved from different sites. PCL’s Job Site InsightsTM Internet of Things (IoT) hubs monitor climate conditions such as temperature, pressure and humidity within the pod and provides notification if thresholds are exceeded. This smart platform provides optimal thermal comfort and indoor air quality within the pod. This platform collects data from smart sensors, cameras, devices and third-party applications to provide real-time insights required to detect and prevent health risks among large social gatherings. Multiple units were constructed by PCL with the same materials used in each. This allowed cut offs or extra items from one unit to be used in the other. Once full production ramps up this same methodology of using standardized materials will be used on a high volume of CCP units allowing for a large reduction in material waste.

Technical Innovation : As the pandemic descended, passionate conversations ignited the creation of a modular, ready-to-use solution for COVID-19 screening and testing that would allow communities to reopen. The team made a conscious effort to repurpose shipping containers as opposed to using raw materials. Technology integration was critical to the project’s plug-and-play vision. The pods can be installed with minimal infrastructure requirements, only requiring an AC power connection for air conditioning and electric heating once installed on-site, along with wired or wireless internet connectivity. The pod is equipped with a suite of customizable technologies powered by Microsoft, enabling caregivers to monitor wait times and crowd sizing via an intelligent dashboard to support smarter, safer staffing and supplies and collecting data from smart sensors, cameras, devices, and third-party applications to provide real-time insights required to detect and prevent health risks among large social gatherings.
