Architectural Excellence : Eleven classrooms and three amenities blocks were placed on four high-profile sites across the Erina Heights Central Coast Grammar school campus. The buildings’ exterior finishes are in Black Diamond’s signature heritage red and classic cream color scheme. Aesthetically-appealing finishes allow the modular units to integrate seamlessly with the existing facilities and compliment the surrounding environment. Floor-to-ground colorbond skirting provides protection to the underside of the buildings, while also creating a more permanent appearance. A full-length covered veranda welcomes students and staff into the classroom. It also provides space to hang school bags and shelter during incremental weather conditions. Inside the classroom, students and staff enjoy a spacious learning environment as a result of the 9.6-by-6.8 metre floor design and the 2.7-metre-high ceilings. Each unit is ambulant and access compliant.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Although the notice to proceed was given late in the process, Black Diamond was confident that all timelines could be met. We worked with two manufacturers – located in Queensland and New South Wales – to build the units for this project.
Black Diamond’s line of standardized modular classrooms provided a cost-effective solution for our client. The fine-tuned and optimized building design takes into consideration materials used and all structural components to provide a product that ensures the best value for the cost. The design includes a steel frame and internal and external linings all precut to size, which are environmentally friendly and provide minimal wastage. Our standardization ensured the buildings all looked identical onsite. Modular stairs, landings, decks and an access-compliant ramp ensured minimal sit disruption. The skirting was pre-cut to size and installed onsite to provide a neat and protective floor-to-ground finish.

Green Building Description : All the modular buildings provided for this project are certified energy-efficient and meet section J (Australia). Green applications used in this project include specified underfloor insulation; upgraded insulation in the walls and ceilings; a thermal break between external cladding and the wall and ceiling frame; and an energy-efficient split-system, reverse-cycle air-conditioning to incorporate fresh airflow. The structural design provides natural ventilation and lighting through the grey glass windows, which can be opened. The perforated custom orb ceiling lining addresses any potential reverberation and acoustic issues.

Technical Innovation : With only a two-week period to install, it was critical that the classrooms were ready for occupation at the start of the academic year.
Working with the natural environment and maintaining the school’s carbon footprint, the buildings were situated in a manner that blended with the landscape and preserved the natural floral. Although the units are independent, they are located in close proximity to create a natural sound barrier between classrooms. Concrete dry-laid blocks and pneumatic earth anchors were used for the installation, which eliminated the need for any excavation and mass concrete footings onsite. This method reduced the need for site rehabilitation and also increased the project safety since the volume of vehicles accessing the site was reduced. Modular stairs and landings prefabricated offsite were installed onsite to provide access to the classroom.
