Architectural Excellence : Cedar Hill Prep School consists of 16 total buildings: (6) 12’ x 45’, (2) 14’ x 45’, (4) 11’ x 75’, (2) 12’ x 48’, (2) 13’ x 45’ and a 2,908 sq. ft. site-built gymnasium as well as a 1,000 sq. ft. main corridor and entrance lobby. The total square footage of this project located in Somerset, New Jersey is 14,027 square feet. Cedar Hill Prep School is a repeat customer of Williams Scotsman. In 2008, we constructed the initial modular school building with a total square footage of 11,400. After much success and an increase in enrollment, Cedar Hill Prep School came to Williams Scotsman looking toward expansion of their school to support the growing enrollment needs. A collaboration of ideas between Williams Scotsman and the architect contracted through Cedar Hill Prep School, the design of the school was complementary of the other buildings on campus.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : All of the flooring, ceilings and movable partitions were installed in the field. The customer had worked with Williams Scotsman in 2008 on another modular project on the campus and appreciated all of the benefits modular construction offered. With a limited footprint on the campus, all of the staging, equipment and materials had to be located in a very tight work area. With barely enough room to bring in a crane, the school had to rent an adjacent swim club for a staging area. In addition to classes during the school year, there was also a summer camp being held onsite. Having year-round activity at the school meant that the minimal disruption modular construction offered was ideal. Project completion was August 2013, in time for start of the 2013 school year.

Technical Innovation : One of the challenges of this project was to incorporate the gymnasium with the modular portion while maintaining the required ceiling height. Williams Scotsman was able to incorporate the modular units for three of the four walls of the conventionally built gymnasium. The remaining wall was site-built, and the height was achieved by reinforcing the modular exterior walls, allowing site-built knee walls to be constructed on top of the reinforced exterior modular walls and roof system. The roof truss system was then constructed and installed on top of these reinforcements.
