Award Winner : Vesta Modular

Architectural Excellence : Working on a turnkey, design/build basis VESTA Modular met the district’s urgent need for (3) new 8-unit, 8,436 SF (6) classroom structures. The attractive, dark brown HardiePlank® exterior siding complements surrounding wooded areas and is accentuated by dark bronze trim. (4) 8’ x 8’ brightly colored exterior panels surround the main entrance to create further architectural interest. In addition to (6) oversized, 900 SF classrooms each building includes (1) Staff Office, Boys, Girls and Staff restrooms and Technology and Custodial Closets. The building corridor width expands to 14 feet at the center where it expands further into an 850 SF Flex Room that provides versatile space for specialty student activities, project collaboration and after hour gatherings. More than ten bright colored vinyl composition colors were used for the field installed flooring finishes. All walls were finished to include Level 5 finishes with a mixture of white or light grey and visually pleasing colors.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The AAPS Facilities team established budget goals for the project that included 50% lower square footage costs and 70% less time for design and construction when compared to conventional methods. The staff was amazed at the rapid installation of the modular units. All construction work including the cost of connection to site utilities, the installation of fire alarm and other low voltage systems, foundations, decks, steps, ramps and flatwork plus the demolition of existing mobile classroom structures, the construction of new canopies and the installation of new fire hydrant systems where necessary was completed in (10) weeks. Prior to construction the district conducted a TCO analysis that includes total cost of acquisition and operating costs, as well as costs related to replacement or upgrades at the end of the life cycle therefore the buildings were built with school quality, easy to maintain finishes and fixtures throughout.

Green Building Description : The AAPS buildings are built with wood. Wood structures have a lower embodied energy than those built with non-combustible materials. The buildings were designed to ensure that students and staff are comfortable in their everyday environment by creating the right indoor temperature while providing remote 24/7/365 monitoring of all space through connection of all HVAC system devices to the district wide building operation and energy management system. Low VOC paints were used to avoid harmful toxic emissions, good Delivering good indoor air quality to occupants during all exterior climate conditions has been assured as a ventilation on demand system using carbon dioxide sensors was installed. The CO2 monitoring system also saves energy during unoccupied periods when the intake of outside air is not required to maintain space temperatures. All interior and exterior lighting includes energy saving LED fixtures.

Technical Innovation : A primary design goal for the project was to create optimized learning environments based on best practices to utilize natural and artificial light, ensure fresh air, maintain classroom temperature and to optimize acoustics and the use of technology for maximum cognitive function and productivity. All interior lighting is LED. Natural light is introduced to each classroom through (3) generously sized windows. Natural light is introduced to the interior of the building corridor with the installation (2) square pyramid Wasco skylights with high performance glazing in each large gathering area. Acoustics have been optimized with the use of a suspended ceiling system at 8’6” height and sound batt insulation in all interior walls. Panduit systems and wireless wi-fi provided in each classroom enable the use of Smart Boards for instruction and access to on-air educational broadcasts.
