Canby Transit Center Restroom
Additional Info
Award Winner : Blazer Industries, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This building was designed to function as a public restroom and break area for the transit workers. Because of the heavy use anticipated and potential for vandalism, materials were selected based on durability as well as aesthetics. The exterior walls are split face CMU block and the interior walls are painted CMU, the floors are concrete with quarry tile and the fixtures are stainless steel
Cost Energy Effectiveness : By having the restroom manufactured off-site, the site development contractor was able to simplify the job-site coordination between trades and reduce the potential for theft or damage to unsecured work speeding up the construction timeline.
The break area is enclosed inside of insulated framed walls within the CMU exterior walls thus taking advantage of the thermal mass of the masonry to dampen the exterior temperature swings. The restrooms are left unheated and rely on the block thermal mass to moderate the temperature within them.

Technical Innovation : This building provided several challenges primarily because of the materials used and the building shape. The concrete and CMU are heavy and non-flexible requiring a design that minimizes potential for flexure and mod sizes that can be handled with available equipment. With eight sides the corners were 45 degrees vs. 90 degrees for conventional construction and the roof framing was also much more involved.
