Architectural Excellence : Destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, the project had an austere start with the presence of President Bush Sr. & George Clooney for the ground breaking of this 25 Bed Critical Access Hospital, based on a donation by the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund. As the building sits on a severe flood plain, it was designed with an elevated footprint to allow surges to pass under it and withstand high winds. This design has since proved well as Hurricane Ike tested it sooner than they would have hoped in 2008 with a surge. Don’t be fooled by the rather utilitarian exterior design, as the hospital’s interior is state of art in its patient room design and finish. A large ED, ICU/Recovery & RAD Department service many of the Gulf Coast oil workers, while the 25 bed inpatient rooms and small outpatient clinic service the community in whole. The project acts to be the first fully modular licensed Critical Access Hospital built here in the US, but certainly not the last opening the door to new market.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Construction for this project was completed in 11 months, with estimates for conventional means to take 24 months, providing for more than 100% efficiencies in speed to occupancy. The remote locals of US Critical Access Hospitals often make finding local contractors & architects difficult as well as pushing out schedules due to the distance workers need to travel, all of which play perfectly into much of what can be pre-engineered and constructed off site by proof of this solution. Also of note, the wall system being a non-load bearing demising wall that is non-structural in design and application. Over 90% of the wall system is re-useable. When it is re-used in a building renovation or remodel, it contributes to LEED®-NC 2.2 MRc1.3. It also contains 88%recycled/recyclable content that is easily diverted from the waste stream contributing to MRc2.1-2.2 & MRc4.1-4.2 Recycled Content.

Technical Innovation : Consisting of 38 modules of various sizes, the structure was built to meet a Type 2-A Construction, LA DOHH Institutional Occupancy. The structure was designed in a manner that the complicated MEP was configured in hallway interstitial spaces. Using an evidenced based design, centered on patient flows and healing environments, budget prioritization was really emphasized on the hospitals interiors. Of special note, complementing the modular design, were factory built demountable patient rooms, baths, labs, and ambulatory spaces. Ever increasing technological advances require flexibility that is unique to this system as spaces can be easily modified for future requirements. A patented design, which incorporates radius corners for patent safety, easy cleaning, and anti-microbial materials all virtually maintenance free, provided with a 10-year warranty. Most of the rooms acting to be pre-designed and factory produced built incredible speed and efficiencies into the budget and schedule.
