Bryn Athyn Freshman Residence Halls
Additional Info
Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions
Architectural Excellence : These two three-story Residence Halls are adjacent to, and compliment the three luxury Residence Suites that were built by NRB in 2010, forming a small student village square on this beautiful Bryn-Athyn College Campus. Emulating the same old world character and charm of so many of the original campus buildings from the late 1800’s, the exteriors are finished in cut stone, brick and stucco facades and feature lead coated copper trims and gutters. The two Halls, connected by an attractive community area, feature three floors of primarily double rooms with some single suites – all for freshman students. The first and third floors offer some quieter study areas, the second floor features the media lounge and laundry facilities are located on the ground floor. The campus grounds support sustainable practices with the residences all positioned to offer the students easy walking or cycling connectivity to other academic buildings and amenities.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The buildings were designed to meet PA energy codes and included Energy Star rated P-Tac heat pump units and high efficiency windows. The primary cost benefits to the college however, were the abbreviated schedule that allowed earlier occupancy, as well as the minimized time needed on the site, reducing the cost of project management and mobilization.

Technical Innovation : The steel framed building is non-combustible construction with pre-poured concrete floors to help deaden sound between levels, and more readily achieve the required fire ratings necessary for these multi-story buildings. NRB built the student residence halls in a static position. 3 stories high and with all modules connected vertically and horizontally for precision alignment and finish. This allowed the owner and architect to walk through and inspect the buildings during fabrication and it facilitated the pre-commissioning of some systems to help reduce the on-site time and activity.
