Additional Info

Award Winner : Meehleis Modular Building Inc

Architectural Excellence : This 14,164 sq. ft. high school science building includes four separate classrooms downstairs and four science classrooms upstairs. There are teacher work rooms on each level and bathrooms on the ground floor. Exterior finishes, including stucco which was applied on site, were selected to match the existing campus. This is a slab on grade building with the second floor consisting of B decking and light weight concrete floor. The walkways and roof system were built into the modules on the north and south sides of the buildings. Custom walkways and roof sections for the remaining sides were prefabricated in the plant. The site was terraced to meet ADA requirements and an elaborate ramp system, devised and engineered to accommodate this feature, was also prefabricated with B decking and light weight concrete and installed at the site. A mansard roof was used with comp shingles and a single ply cool roof in the mechanical well.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The method of installation was an important cost saving component to the client. Due to restricted site conditions (access of equipment) the district chose permanent modular construction over traditional site build construction allowing for an accelerated schedule and significant monetary savings. All the railings, ramps, additional roofs and walkways were all prefabricated in the plant by Meehleis, thus provided seamless installation and an overall cost savings. Meehleis Modular acted as the general contractor as well for all the site work helping to streamline the overall project. The superintendent of the district informed us that the project came in under budget by $400,000.

Technical Innovation : Incorporating the ramp system, stairs and railings as a solution to the challenges posed by the terraced site gave this project a unique look. The result is a building with full wrap around walkways. Materials used included: low-E windows, recycled steel and lumber from sustainable forests. The modules and all of the prefabricated components were built in a net zero plant utilizing the plant’s solar array to generate electricity.
