Additional Info
Award Winner : ATCO Structures & Logistics Ltd.
Architectural Excellence : For our client Bonafide Café, a coffee shop chain with almost 100 years of history in Argentina and more than 200 locations in South America, building with a reconditioned 20’ container unit enabled the new location to be in line with its brand of small and quaint shops, to ensure minimal disturbance to the environment during the construction phase, and to fit seamlessly into its surroundings within Vitacura Park. With the wooden deck, guests are able to enjoy the park’s atmosphere while enjoying their meals. The building’s exterior is composed of fiber Cementous panels, which offer durability and design flexibility to ensure that the simple and sleek aesthetics suit the purpose of the building. Lastly, the structure has a rooftop garden that reuses the water from the café by pumping it back into the sprinkler system.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The structure is built with a recycled container unit, passing the lower cost onto the end user. Requiring only metal supports and not a traditional foundation, the building is highly relocatable. The inner liners and exterior panels were both arranged in the most resource efficient way to reduce wastage. Quick installation and ease of assembly both allowed for time and cost savings.
Green Building Description : From the materials used to the rooftop garden, this café boasts multiple green features. The café was built from a recycled unit, reducing carbon footprint. Thermal and acoustic comforts were both achieved with the ventilated skin-based coating from the fiber Cementous boards. The panels are also extremely durable, reducing the need for replacement and new materials. Finally, the rooftop garden uses treated water recycled from the café, creating its own irrigation system that feeds the green cover composed of perennial plants.

Technical Innovation : Because of the venue’s location within Vitacura Park, construction with minimal impact on the surroundings was paramount. As 98% of the project, plus the deck, was built in a controlled factory setting, this reconditioned modular unit enabled easy and quick assembly by not requiring foundation, thus, having no impact on the ground. The café’s floor-to-ceiling windows and awning, painted fiber Cementous boards, wooden deck, rooftop garden and green cover of perennial plants all not only contributed to a sleek, modern and minimalist design, but also creates energy and resource efficiencies. The windows reduced the amount of lighting required while the awning provides shade to guests when needed, the Cementous panels features a coating that enables thermal and acoustic benefits that reduce noise and energy consumption, and the irrigation system for the rooftop garden uses water circulated back from the café.
