Blast Resistant Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : Black Diamond Group
Architectural Excellence : The temporary building is a lunchroom for workers in a blast zone. It is used extensively during petrochemical and refinery shut-downs.
It is an inviting, bright, wide open space. Fluorescent features in a drop ceiling offer a lighting level in excess of 80' candles. All electrical and data is incorporated in the walls and ceiling to offer a pleasing finish – none are surface mounted.
The module is placed directly on the ground with no foundation or blocking requirements.
It meets the following criteria: ASCE “Design of Blast Resistant Buildings in Petrochemical Facility,” TM 5-1300 “Structures to Resist the Efforts of Accidental Explosions,” site specific Peak Side on Pressure (Pso), 200 to 300 m sec time duration, “Medium” damage response range (per ASCE App. 5.B) and complies with these codes, API 753 “Management of Hazards Associated with Location of Process Plant Portable Buildings,” CSA W59-M “Welded Steel Construction,” and NFPA-101 Life Safety Code.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The walls consist of two layers of insulation with an air gap between them. This provides a thermo break to prevent cold transfer through the exterior metal plating.
In the winter, temperatures in this region can drop to minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit’s insulation factors are designed to deal with these climatic conditions. The floors and walls are R20, and the roof is R28.

Technical Innovation : Explosions during construction and renovation at refining and petrochemical plants are a safety, as well as a risk management and insurance concern. This modular lunchroom is innovative due to its blast-resistance: exterior blast doors with robust hardware and closures, furnace fresh air intake comes with a blast damper, 100% electric to insure no ignition sources, dedicated communication outlets and receptacles, non-claustrophobic 8’ ceilings, drop ceiling conceal the ceiling mounted heat/air conditioning ducts, electrical and data exterior wall penetrations through blast resistant penetrations, structural steel blast resistant frame work, specially designed skid frame to minimize any potential uplift, four corner roof lifting lugs allows for craning into difficult locations, if required, modules can be stacked up to three high, electrical service disconnect mounted on the end of the module, 1500 VA stand by power source.
