Architectural Excellence : The classroom is designed as an open space 24’ wide with natural light providing the majority of illumination. Each classroom unit has a barrier free washroom and a mechanical room and thus operates independently of the rest of the programme. Light coloured wall treatment and ample windows allow for the visual connection to the natural surroundings.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The construction season in this Northern community is extremely short. Shipping modular units fully assembled 24’ wide minimized the site installation, and saved money on foundations and reduced the on-site construction in inclement weather.

Green Building Description : The primary building material of the modular units in all its forms is wood, contributing to a lighter carbon footprint, less air and water pollution and reduction of embodied energy. Careful selection of materials, paints and finishes with low VOC emissions contributed to the excellent indoor air quality. Excellent thermal resistance (R60 and R52) and air leakage quality of the building envelope achieved through the use of spray foam insulation.

Technical Innovation : The classrooms are built with insulation exceeding the standards for comfort and energy conservation. The insulation is sprayed into assembly cavities, providing not only the high R value, but also a seamless vapour barrier. The floor has a R52 rating and the ceiling is R60 (!). Extra electrical outlets and data ports are provided to assure future sufficiency. LED lighting exceeds the recommended practice for school lighting along with low maintenance. Walls, floor, and ceiling assemblies provide the Sound Transmission Class ratings mandated in the Noise Isolation Class NIC45 for classrooms.
