BelovED Community Charter School - Multi-Story
Additional Info
Award Winner : Aries Building Systems, LLC
Architectural Excellence : BelovED Charter School had outgrown the capacity of its original school and sought to expand the campus. Aries Building Systems, LLC was called in to design, fabricate and install a new freestanding elementary school annex for the growing BelovED to increase the capacity of its elementary school facility from 500 students to well over 900 students. The new annex is made up of 20 modules in the following configuration: 16 (13’8”x66’), 2 (13’8”x53’), and 2 (8’x26’). Aries was also responsible for the delivery and installation of an 8’x8’x32’ tall, 2 stop modular elevator in-line with the Standards for Accessible Designs to provide ADA access between the original building and the new annex. The building’s exterior was designed to reflect the scale of the surrounding downtown Jersey City neighborhood.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The entire 16,320 square feet, 2 story annex is 100% modular at 85% completeness of modules when leaving the factory. The project was completed in record time to meet the deadline for the start of school without sacrificing quality or style. The project plan was designed to maximize output in a short amount of time with 60 days for the necessary module design components, 26 days for fabrication and 63 days for delivery, installation, and finishing. The building’s modular design ensures reduced maintenance costs while increasing the lifespan of the whole structure.

Technical Innovation : The new BelovED Charter School annex had to be situated as close to the main campus as possible. Working with a small site forced the logistics team at Aries Building Systems, LLC to be particularly creative in developing and maximizing the available space. As a two-story building, it utilizes both an interior and exterior stairwell for access to the second floor along with a 2 stop modular elevator provided. All access ways were designed and installed according to the ADA Standards for Accessible Design to ensure their accessibility to people with disabilities. The site is located within a FEMA-designated flood zone with poor soil conditions, which added another level of complexity to the project. To ensure that all annex installation work conformed to FEMA guidelines regarding floodplain management, the entire structure was welded to a grid of pylons driven 45 feet into the ground, effectively raising the first floor four feet above grade.
