Architectural Excellence : The design required careful consideration of the natural Colorado environment and the existing neighborhood. Upon establishing the square footage and room requirements, the layout of the modules was provided, followed by interior and exterior finishes. The foundation was designed to provide for permanently installed grade level modules with natural landscaping and playground areas. Classrooms were located on the four corners of the building with windows in two directions to provide natural light throughout the day. The building was comprised of modules with a custom floor plan that accommodated the roof system including a timber frame entry and shade canopies on the East and West sides of the building. Colors were chosen in earth tones to compliment the natural environment in Colorado with exterior siding and roof shingle colors to take advantage of the solar heat transference in this climate in the winter and summer.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The climate in Colorado required upgraded building specifications with 2”x6” exterior wall studs with a continuous air infiltration barrier and R-19 insulation. The roof system was provided with ice and water shield, vapor barrier, and R-38 attic insulation. To achieve the desired finished product in the time frame required a combination of modular and site built construction was provided. The design started with the module CAD layouts provided by Amtex, Corp. The layouts were shared with the other design team members who provided the final interior and exterior finishes as well as the structural design. This provided an expedient cost effective design that was approved by the funding sources with all costs identified before construction proceeded. The scope was divided to allow the manufacturing of the modules to proceed while the site work and foundation progressed simultaneously providing an expedient schedule.

Technical Innovation : The project required the approval of two funding sources that each had specific guidelines including complete design approval before the funding was allocated. Satellite Shelters, Inc partnered with a design team that shared information to develop a final set of drawings for submittal to the funding sources. Upon approval of the funding, a final schedule was provided that defined the scope of work to be provided for manufacturing and at the site. The roof trusses were designed with areas to accommodate the furnaces with an additional “bonus” area for storage. The furnaces and storage area can be accessed with a modular pull down stair which provides an area out of the weather for furnace maintenance. Automatic doors were provided at the entry to allow for a convenient access to the facility for parents.
