Award Winner : Triumph Modular
Architectural Excellence : The Barnstable Early Childhood Center project was designed to provide students and staff with an attractive, comfortable and age appropriate space for learning. The newly constructed permanent modular early childhood center consists of 8,889 sq. ft., six classrooms, and a state of the art occupational/physical therapy room. It accommodates up to 223 students, a significant increase from the communities former capacity of 160 students. The new modular classrooms enable the school system's preschool to be concentrated in one location. The preschool program will continue to offer four half-day programs known as integrated preschools, with a mix of children with special needs and peers without special needs, as well as, run a full-day program for children with Autism in partnership with the New England Center for Children. The exterior finishes were chosen to be whimsical yet still blend somewhat with the existing architecture and natural surroundings.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : In order for the childcare center project to become a reality it was necessary for the project team to work together to value engineer $1,000,000 from the budget. Triumph worked with the architect to make suggestions to save cost. For example, the original design called for traditional painted drywall but in the end the team opted to use cost saving vinyl gypsum in the classrooms but keep the painted drywall in the entryway and corridors. In the end, the team was able to successfully value engineer enough cost to make the project viable. There are rooms that pull double duty for example the conference room also fills the need of a staff break room. With the efficiency afforded by modular construction, the total time from factory fabrication to completion of the school was only 138 days. Ninety percent of the building was completed at the factory including the finish work such as flooring, cabinetry, siding and painting.

Technical Innovation : The building was designed with modular construction in mind. The new school was planned with careful consideration for its primary occupants in mind. The facility features equipment, furnishings and even bathroom fixtures designed for preschoolers. The building was constructed of 20 modules with a center corridor. The modular units were staggered in size to create alcoves along the façade for visual interest. The building came from the factory with accommodations to allow for specialized equipment including a rock wall and ceiling mounted swing. Each classroom has a dedicated restroom with age appropriate fixtures. Throughout the building there are two-foot by two-foot ground level windows that offer the small occupants a feeling of connectedness with the outdoors. Flooring tiles incorporate color for aesthetic appeal and to give visual cues to students when walking from one classroom to another.
