Architectural Excellence : Sacramento State University acquired the McAuliffe Ballfield site with the intent to build more student housing. In return and prior to commencing on construction of the student housing, the University was required to build a replacement ballfield complex on another site. Along with the ballfields, public facilities were required. Utilizing modular construction was the best option for the client due to the speed in which the project could be in place, and also to minimize disruption to the site. The modular building houses a concession stand, accessible restrooms, storage rooms, a mechanical room with an exterior entrance, exterior drinking fountains, and a team room to allow for interior and private space for the teams to meet. Parapet walls were incorporated into the roof design to add height to the structure, and to hide the rooftop HVAC units. The building has a Stuc-O-flex exterior finish with tile in the alcoves to blend in with the standard design elements of the area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building portion of the new complex is a dramatic improvement from the previous facilities available which serves both the Sacramento Men’s Senior Baseball League and the East Sacramento Babe Ruth Little League. The speed in which the building was able to be installed and occupied allowed for minimal building construction interruption to the park. This also minimized costs associated to security and repairs due to construction site vandalism concerns. The speed of construction for this portion of the project also allowed the University to move forward on the new construction slated to be done on the McAuliffe Ballfield property. Utilizing modular construction allowed the client’s return on investment to be seen in more ways than just this building.

Technical Innovation : Several features were utilized in the design of this building to allow for easier and more cost effective maintenance, and to minimize potential vandalism. The team room was finished with stained concrete floors and tape & texture gypsum walls. The concession was finished with tile floors, durable and easy to clean Extrutech PVC wall panels, Ready Access windows, stainless steel countertops, and chrome shelving throughout. The restrooms feature concrete floors and painted CMU block to allow for efficient cleaning, paperstone partitions and vandal resistant stainless steel fixtures. Natural ventilation is utilized for the restrooms. Security bars were added to the team room windows, and Ready Access windows were installed in the concession for added security. The mechanical room is strategically placed between the restrooms to allow for easy access and maintenance.
