Architectural Excellence : Mountaineer Hall at Appalachian State University was built to meet the needs of a growing student population at ASU. Modular building was chosen by the University to fast track this project in order to have the new facility open for the upcoming academic year. The project took 9 months from start to completion. The modular buildings were set and sealed in 12 days. The exterior is brick with drywall interior walls. This dormitory sits on the side of a mountain. It was designed to efficiently use the available land on campus. The building provides hotel style rooms for increased student privacy as well as private bathrooms. Common areas on each floor facilitate a feeling of community between the residents. The dormitory houses 460 students.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This dormitory is certified LEED Silver. The building was designed to have many energy and water conserving attributes. Mold resistant drywall was used throughout the entire building. The same type of drywall was used throughout the building so as to be able to use any drywall pieces and thus reduce the amount of drywall waste. All windows are energy efficient and tinted. All sections were brought in as true modulars, thus saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in transport carriages.

Technical Innovation : Pre-built floor assembly was utilized at the factory to lessen production time. The boxes were identical so this also shortened production time at the factory as well as installation time on site. The dormitory was 80% finished when it arrived on site, thus lessening time that was spent on trim work and finishing on site. All utility chases were designed to be accessed from the building exterior. This eliminated unnecessary down time when crane setting the units. A temporary disposable roof was designed, which was a major breakthrough. This replaced a permanent roof structure, saving needless plywood and rubber.
