Architectural Excellence : This 3-unit complex serves Los Angeles County residents living with HIV/AIDS, many of whom have fallen on difficult financial times. This building houses a dental clinic with three operatories, a food pantry which provides food and hygiene items, and nutrition counseling. This building evokes a strong sense of permanence. The concrete foundation is pit-set. A parapet enhances the roof line. Custom exterior storefront doors and windows complement the stucco exterior. A unique aluminum canopy along the front identifies the entrance. Brazilian IPE wood was utilized in fences that define landscape areas and enclose an existing generator. Interior walls are painted drywall with a four color palate. A ceiling height of 8’-6” adds volume to the interior. Custom flooring enhances the interior. All the finishes help to convey the attention to detail that went into providing this unique building to an organization that provides a much needed service to the community.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Much planning was essential in the design stage between the factory and the dental equipment supplier to ensure that the majority of the plumbing and electrical requirements of the dental and laboratory equipment were completed in the controlled and cost efficient factory environment. Vacuum and air lines were completed on site. Care was taken in design to ensure that all cabinetry and plumbing fixtures were able to be installed in the factory. The parapet was designed to conceal the roofline and was kept to a height that allowed it to be completed prior to shipping from the factory. Dual glazed windows were used throughout. Since the food pantry and the dental clinic operate on different schedules, two stand-alone HVAC systems were designed that provided zoning for the two distinct occupancies. Generally, any item that could effectively be completed in manufacturing ensured that tight schedules and financial constraints were met.

Technical Innovation : A custom cabinet mounted in a wall between two dental operatories houses an x-ray machine that is accessible by two dentists. The x-ray machine is digital that emits approximately 80% less radiation than conventional methods. Several digital pictures shot simultaneously provide a 3-D picture to the dentist. The digital images are stored on computers as data and can be sent anywhere in the world instantly. No waiting for film to be developed. There are two autoclaves in the clinic to ensure proper sterilization. The dental chairs and overhead dental examination lights are designed to accommodate right-handed and left-handed dentists. The dental chairs are also designed to handle patients in wheelchairs.
