Architectural Excellence : M Space provided Anne Arundel County Community College with a 132’x120’ library complex consisting of two rows of 11 modules. The building was only required for 12 months and needed to accommodate over 10,000 books stored on 96” high shelves. To achieve these unique requirements, M Space chose to utilize a pre-leased building with a mansard roof and raised the ceiling 6”. A mansard roof is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it enables optimal use of interior height space, allowing the very tall bookshelves to fit into the building.

The library building includes nine private offices, two storage closets, a classroom, a unisex restroom, a break room/kitchenette and a reception area. On site, the facility was placed on existing tennis courts, resulting in minimal site disturbance. Each main entry door is a "storefront" door, which has a single slope canopy for weather considerations. The exterior of the building was painted to match existing buildings and the campus color scheme.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : An existing M Space building was repurposed to suit the needs of the college for this project, so the construction of a new facility was unnecessary. The act of repurposing and recycling buildings greatly reduces material consumption and waste, which supports M Space’s ‘green’ initiative.

During installation, dual trans-lifts were utilized and the buildings were rolled onto the foundation, eliminating the need for a crane. Building units were set as they arrived to the site, so a staging area was not needed. This set sequence allowed M Space to offer significant cost savings to this client.

Technical Innovation : Before the facility was ready for use by the college, it was repurposed and converted from administrative space into a temporary library complex. The ceiling of the building was raised 6" and the floor load was increased to 100 PSF to accommodate the tall and heavy library stacks. A book drop was added to the building so students could return books after hours, and a sprinkler system and an anti-theft security device were installed. All of the building's interior finishes were updated and replaced, including the carpet, vinyl covered walls and T-grid ceiling. Pre-engineered ramps, decks and stairs were added to the exterior of the building.
