Architectural Excellence : In an area filled with crime, residents of Harrisburg were calling on local authorities to help fill the void by adding a new police facility. SGS Architects designed a building that is contemporary & logical, while meeting the needs of the local community and law enforcement officials. Architectural thin sliced-brick was applied at the MODLOGIQ facility, which provided a façade that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, so that even the exterior signage could be completed in the facility. Concrete was poured over the steel subframe for a superior, durable finish. The project was built at the MODLOGIQ facility in only 17 weeks and shipped to the site, ready for occupancy shortly thereafter.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By choosing off-site construction the City eliminated the biggest concern of all, a tight area with no lay down area for construction materials. The design build aspect of the project met the city’s budget, and provide contactors a safe and secure place to store construction materials. Local mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades were also hired by the City to complete the MEP portion of the work off-site, minimizing the work on-site, while meeting the city’s budget.

Green Building Description : Our off-site, “Build-Together” construction process allowed for much tighter tolerance of joints and seams, which supports the precise application of the air barrier, sealing of penetrations and joints, installation of thermal insulation, minimization of thermal bridging, and allows for a greater degree of third-party testing and verification. This provides an increased and more reliable level of thermal performance therefore reducing annual operational costs by as much as 15- 20%. With a one-day set of the building, this project required fewer on-site workers, less temporary heating and power, and reduced equipment emissions. This particular design allows the building to be easily and more affordably disassembled into the original components and relocated or adapted for reuse rather than demolished and discarded.

Technical Innovation : Working with the owner, the City of Harrisburg, the design team implemented Level 3 ballistic rated walls, and also a level 3 ballistic rated roof to protect the building and occupants from outside threats. This vital piece of infrastructure was also competed at the off-site facility, allowing the skin, exterior signage, and roofing to be competed at the facility. The coordination and execution of the project meant that there was very little site work involved. The building was set in only one day and finished in matter of a few short weeks.
