Architectural Excellence : The project consists of two modular structures which house the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park Visitor Center. The primary structure houses the lobby, exhibit space, ranger station, meeting room, visitor area, and support spaces. The secondary structure houses 4 public restrooms, a public shower room, and a custodial room. The building exterior utilizes a mixture of vertical grooved fiber cement siding and horizontal lapped fiber cement siding. The unique stepped roof design maximizes the interior volume while minimizing the total building height. To further maximize the interior volume, the roof structure is left exposed in the lobby and exhibit areas in lieu of a traditional ceiling system. Large glazed openings are provided throughout the public areas to take advantage of the views onto the wilderness park and a pair of large overhead glazed doors are provided to open the building onto the adjacent patio for large events.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to the location and scope of the project, the ability to perform the work in a factory environment provided the opportunity for significant construction cost reductions while simultaneously reducing the development impact and duration on the project site. The exterior opening locations were thoroughly reviewed to meet the design intent while maximizing the work that could be done in the factory. The mechanical system was designed and installed to maximize the work that could be completed in the factory. Custom module sizes and shapes were developed to minimize the installation time and cost and to minimize the site impact. The development of a larger than typical restroom module allowed the restrooms, shower room and custodial space to be completed in the factory, leaving fully finished.

Technical Innovation : The client’s design direction required the project to utilize specialized module sizes to create the finished building. Additionally, there was a desire to minimize the site impact given the natural setting of the project. To meet these requirements Silver Creek developed a series of specialized building frames which allowed the primary building to be constructed with only 4 modules which were placed on a series of raised piers. The modules, which measured 10’-0” x 46’-0” and 14’-0” x 48’-0”, integrated a concrete floor system and the stepped roof structure. The exposed structural members and connections in the public areas were designed to be aesthetically pleasing.
