Addition at Westland Mddle School
Additional Info
Award Winner : EMH Environmental, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This two story addition was designed to add six additonal classrooms, a new stairwell, and a entrance and exit to a existing courtyard. The classrooms contain custom milwork. Interior finishes include impact resitant drywall and vinyl tile floors. Each classroom meets the schools system educational specifications for site built construction. Project completion was sixteen weeks from ground breaking to complete modules. All fourteen modules were placed in the course of fourteen hours and placed by a 550 ton all terrain crane with a reach of over 200 feet.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The design of this building incorporated field installed R 20 wall insulation and R 25 rigid insulation in the roof. Exterior brick was field installed on both levels. Heating and cooling are supplied by piped water through unit ventilators. All units were placed on grade using piers and a flowable grout fill that minimizes the crawl space. Foam insulation under the concrete floor completes the process. The project was completed in less than five months saving time, money and disruption to normal school operation. EMH Environmental, inc., completed the project on time and within the budget set forth by the school system.

Technical Innovation : This non-combustible building construction uses post and beam structural steel design and pre-poured concrete floors. This building was built as a two story structure at the manufacturer with strict dimensional toloerances. the set up placed great emphasis on dimensional accuracy to allow the structure to match existing field conditions. All mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were pre-wired. Brick exterior was applied on site. This project reduced time lines and saved labor costs due to controlled factory assembly. Site disruption was minimal, allowing teachers to work without distraction. All modules were picked with a 550 ton crane using lifting eyes and set in place in one day.
