Award Winner : BCT Structures, A Clean Harbors Company
Architectural Excellence : The goal was to design and fabricate a dental office without the appearance of a modular building that would adhere to strict building controls and guidelines for new development in a small rural community. The surrounding environment within the town had to be considered in order to keep within the architectural appearance guidelines. The building layout incorporated private offices, consultation rooms, 6 dental stations, x-ray room, dental tool cleaning and processing rooms, staff lounge, and an open and friendly waiting area with a children’s play area. The dental office featured an open two storey entrance to the building that allowed for architectural appeal as well as adding to the incoming natural lighting into the building. The exterior featured a turret design and hip roof. The cladding incorporated use of brick and acrylic stucco. The interior was tape, fill, and painted drywall with institutional healthcare finishes for the floor and any other applicable areas.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Windows and doors were thermally broken commercial units and were also Low E. High efficiency condensing down flow gas furnaces and air conditioners were also used. Wall construction was 2 x 6 with R20 insulation and R40 in both the floor and ceiling. Skylights and turrets were also used to allow additional natural light into the building and reduce the requirement for additional lighting.

Technical Innovation : One of the modules featured a chamfered corner to allow the interface with the turret entrance. Special framing techniques were required to build the module to withstand the shipping stresses. The modules were designed with 16” deep engineered open web trusses to accommodate the modules width and structurally support the aesthetic rock façade in the reception area. The medical gas system, exterior and interior finishes were maximized in the plant to reduce time on site. The curved bulkhead was also installed in the plant and incorporated special design and framing techniques to hold it in place as it crossed marriage lines and had to withstand transportation to site.
