Additional Info

Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions

Architectural Excellence : This addition is a single-story facility with an MRI suite, Control Room, In-Patient holding and prep areas, restrooms, and soiled and clean laundry. The exterior is stucco to compliment the existing hospital, while the interior is finished with drywall, taped, filled and painted, copper shielded walls and ceiling in the MRI area and a raised computer floor at the control room. The building consists of five modules put together side by side and is tied in directly to the hospital’s existing MRI Suite and Outpatient area. In the MRI area, the unit floor has a large opening that fits precisely down over the poured-on-site MRI slab. A large section of the roof area at the MRI, spanning a mate line, had to be removable to allow crane setting of the MRI down into the units. Pre-poured concrete floors completed at the plant had to be dropped 6” in the control room for cabling. Sprayed fireproofing was also completed at the plant on all structural elements and touched up on site.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to the amount of disruption to the hospital caused by internal renovations and the lack of space availability, a creative solution needed to be found. With a small available piece of land adjacent to their existing MRI suite, and the need to maintain their competitiveness with surrounding Hospitals and private centers, the modular concept was the answer. NRB’s “build-together” method allowed for all copper shielding, piping and HVAC systems to be installed along with the exterior stucco, saving extensive and expensive time at the site. This building, with its steel and concrete design principles, meets the State of New York’s tough seismic requirements for hospitals because it is considered a permanent addition. Building modular allowed them to occupy the facility months earlier than if they would have built with conventional means – a win-win for them.

Technical Innovation : The building is structural steel post and beam, non-combustible construction for flexibility in any future renovations. The exterior finishes were completed at the factory, keeping the on-site set and finish time down to a minimum. The modular addition had to meet stringent health and seismic regulations for hospitals and presented challenges at the MRI room where the copper shielding had to be completely installed at the factory, tested, and re-seamed and tested on site under high scrutiny because it crossed a mate line. This created a challenge for the shield installers, who found a way to install the shielding at the factory with minimal seaming on site. The removable roof section at the MRI room also posed a challenge as it was split by a mate line, which required roof support beams and steel rafters to be cantilevered until site bolt connections could be completed.
