Architectural Excellence : The two-story temporary office and housing facility for the fire fighters consists of two full levels above ground built with four 12’ x52’ building modules. Even though temporary in nature, the design of the staff quarters offers a comfortable and functional space to conduct the regular operations of Fire Hall #17. The lower floor features workstations, kitchen, training/meeting space, storage space for specialized equipment, mechanical room, radio cabinet, bathroom and staircase. The upper floor features eight sleeping quarters, forty-one lockers, and two bathrooms/showers.
The vertical corrugated metal siding exterior wall gives a modern and urban look to the exterior of the building.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building for staff quarters was designed, delivered and installed before the City of Vancouver begins construction for the new permanent site built Fire Hall #17. Once the permanent Fire Hall is complete, the modules of the temporary staff quarters can then be relocated and renovated for another use, eliminating the need to site-build a structure that would ultimately be demolished.

Green Building Description : The temporary structure needed to reflect the forward thinking of the City of Vancouver in terms of creating energy efficient temporary facilities that offers adequate space for training activities for other city fire hall staff at its current site. The building is fitted with a split system air conditioner to provide a comfortable indoor environment. Additionally the building design allows for natural light to flow in.

Technical Innovation : Using four factory-built modules, Metric Modular designed the staff quarters keeping in mind the special requirements for this building, which included a two hour fire wall construction on the south wall; BX cable for fire alarm, low voltage cable for lighting controls and speakers, addressable fire alarm, an intruder alarm system, a factory-installed sprinkler system throughout to meet NFPA standards and a mast for radio antenna.
